“It’s a small town.  Any change after twenty-eight years is going to make them stare.  That is one problem with this town, there’s not really a lot of job openings, just enough for the people here.”  It had been a miracle that Graham had the budget for her back when she’d first gotten here.

When he made the high-and-mighty comment, she rolled her eyes.  ”I’m sure if you ask your father really sweetly, he’ll let you be a fairytale princess sheriff, too.”  She grinned at the thought.  ”What were you even doing in Manhattan, you had a closet full of suits.”  That would be a sight, he had always sworn he’d never be a nine-to-five stiff in a monkey suit.

“Doesn’t help that everyone seems to’ve known one another since forever and a day.”

With that notion, Neal took another sip of his cocoa, though upon noticing that it was no longer as hot as to be cautious for, he took a slightly larger drink and paused for a moment as he put the cup down before fixing his gaze back on Emma. Looking her over, he couldn’t help but notice she seemed particularly stressed out, and he could hardly believe all of that stress had come just from her parents doing the do on her desk—though he was hardly in the right to pry into affairs like that. So in stead of asking her all kinds of questions pertaining to the bags under her eyes and the strained look on her face, he kept quiet and focused on the feedback she was giving him.

Despite her apparent stress levels, she was still cheeky as ever, and he couldn’t stop a grin from breaking through onto his features. However, said grin turned sour soon enough upon the mention of his father.

“Can hardly imagine me askin’ my dad for anything. Don’t much feel like prancing around like a pretty princess, either.”

Due to the mention of his father, the last words came out harsher than intended as well, and he quickly turned his attention to the other question she had posed him, lest his mood should drop indefinitely.

“Oh, y'know—change of pace. Worked as a contractor for a while, pretty neat job ‘till I met the uptight part of the customer archive. Yikes.”
